Goodman & Gilman's The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics 12th Edition. One only has to look at the list of contributors, comprising over 120 professors, fellows, deans and lecturers, to appreciate this is an extensive and definitive text. The book is structured into nine sections covering general principles, neuropharmacology, modulation of cardiovascular function, inflammation, immunomodulation and haematopoeisis, endocrine pharmacology, gastrointestinal pharmacology, chemotherapy of infectious diseases, chemotherapy of neoplastic diseases, and special systems pharmacology. The sections are further subdivided into 67 chapters, which deal with individual topics such as depression, psychosis, congestive heart failure and hypertension. Finally, there are two appendices that deal with prescriptions and pharmacokinetics.
The individual chapters guide the reader comprehensively through a topic. Chapters are well structured, giving a detailed background to the pathophysiology of a condition then discussing the drug treatment. Details of the pharmacology of drugs are aided by clear, colour, easy-to-follow figures and extensive tables. Overall, this logical approach to each individual chapter makes them interesting and easy to read.
Therapeutic uses of drugs are clearly discussed, with information on adverse reactions given. Many chapters finish with a clinical summary and all have an extensive list of references for further reading. Details of pharmacokinetics of drugs are dealt with in appendix II.
This is an excellent, comprehensive and authoritative textbook and will prove invaluable to both undergraduates and postgraduates studying pharmacy, pharmacology or medicine.
